The Pelicans and Willie Green they are scheduled to finalize a deal this week that will make the Suns assistant to the new coach in New Orleans, reports Andrew Lopez of ESPN (Twitter link).
There has been hope for several days that the Pelicans – who hunt down Stan Van Gundy after just one season – he will hire Green as his boss. Reports and weekend said Green was considered around the NBA as the top scorer in the position, while a Monday’s report he called it the strong favorite and a report Tuesday he said which New Orleans planned to employ. According to Lopez, the two parties are now close to the end of the agreement.
A former NBA gun guard, Green made a transition to the coaching ranks in 2016, working with the Warriors as an assistant for three seasons before moving to Phoenix in 2019. He was on the staff of Monty Williams for the last two and a second years spoken to the Magi and Magic on their coaching vacancies before zeroing in on the Pelicans ’work.
Green’s current team remains active in the NBA Finals, which will probably slow down the hiring process a bit. Although he and the Pelicans complete their deal this week, Green figures to end the season with Phoenix. He is looking for his third championship as an NBA assistant coach.
