The 2021-22 regular season of the NBA will end on October 19, reports Shams Charania of The Athletic (Twitter
ligami). According to Charania, the league sent a note to teams Thursday informing them of this date and several others, confirming that the annual calendar will return to normal next season.
For Charania, some of the other main dates are as follows:
- September 28, 2021: Training camps begin
- April 16, 2022: The playoffs begin
- June 2, 2022: NBA Finals begin
- June 19, 2022: Last possible date for the NBA Finals (Game 7)
- June 23, 2022: NBA draft
The coronavirus pandemic has led to a disruption of the NBA’s regular schedule, which has led to a shortened season both in 2020 and 2021. There has been some talk last year about the possibility of the league. embracing change and raising their calendar by a couple of months on a permanent basis, but that discourse dropped immediately, especially when TV ratings were down for last year’s playoffs, which took place in the summer.
ESPN’s Baxter Holmes noted this week that a decision has been taken collectively by the NBA, the players ’union and the league’s TV network partners to get the annual plan back to normal as soon as possible rather than to make the plan slowly over the course of a few years. Thursday’s note to the teams confirms that it will happen in 2021-22.
