Marcus Smart, Boston Celtics guard, could be sidelined this summer in light of recent reports of frustration he has made for Brad Stevens.
Stevens, who was Boston coach from 2013-21, replaced Danny Ainge as director of the team’s basketball operations this spring. Now driving in the front office, Stevens ’interaction with the players as a coach could influence another move of the season.
According to Chris Mannix of Sports Illustrated, sources indicate that Stevens has become increasingly frustrated with Smart’s unpredictable gameplay in recent years. Although the 27-year-old guard is one of the best perimeter defenders in the NBA, two sources told Mannix that it is more likely that Smart will be replaced this summer than signed to an extension.
It won’t be the first time Stevens ’feelings for a player he coached a few months ago have influenced his decision as Boston’s first basketball manager. He orchestrated blockbuster commercial Kemba Walker, and reports surfaced later details the rocky relationship between the two.
