World No. 2 Naomi Osaka has not competed since he retired from the French Open after was fined $ 15,000 for not participating in post-match press obligations because of what she called mental health problems.
Osaka remains on track to play in the upcoming Summer Olympics in Tokyo, and organizers of events for the National Bank Open to be held in Montreal from August 9-15 confirmed Wednesday that the 23-year-old will participate in that tournament.
Wimbledon champion and world No. 1 female Ashleigh Barty is among other well-known players expected to compete in Montreal.
“We are delighted to receive the likes of Ashleigh Barty, Naomi Osaka and Aryna Sabalenka, as well as Bianca Andreescu, who we know will receive an age-appropriate reception from our passionate fans in Montreal,” explained tournament director Eugene Lapierre in a statement shared by Reuters (h / t ESPN).
According to Sportsnet, the aforementioned Andreescu, a Canadian, and the living legend of men Rafael Nadal will be looking to defend his National Bank Open Bank titles that they won in 2019. Last year’s events were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Christmas pulled out of Wimbledon and the Olympics last month for health reasons that are not related to the virus.
