Police say they arrested the assailant in the southern German city and there are no indications of other suspects.
Several people were killed and others injured in a knife attack in the southern city of Wuerzburg, police said.
“The attacker was arrested after police used firearms. There are several injuries and even casualties, ”police said on Twitter on Friday, without giving details on the suspect’s motives.
“There is no indication of a second suspect. There is NO danger to the population, ”police said.
The Bild newspaper said three people were killed and six injured in the attack.
Police spokeswoman Kerstin Kunick said officers were alerted around 5pm (15:00 GMT) for a knife attack in Barbarossa Square in the city center.
Videos posted on social media show that a young man who appeared to be holding a knife has been chased away by other men holding chairs until police arrive. Another video appeared to show blood on the ground.
Bavarian Governor Markus Soeder expressed shock at the news of the attack. “We mourn with the victims and their families,” he wrote on Twitter.
Wuerzburg is a city of about 130,000 people located between Munich and Frankfurt.
