Last coronavirus: New York State daily skin infections top 1,000 for first time since May

New York State reported more than 1,000 new Covid-19 cases in a day for the first time since mid-May as cases rose amid slowing vaccination rates, the spread of the Delta variant and relaxed social measures.

Officials reported 1,156 new positive cases, representing a positive percentage of 1.39 percent and a seven-day average of 1.19 percent.

Andrew Cuomo, governor of New York, acknowledged that the fight against Covid-19 was far from over.

“While we continue to fight the Covid-19 virus throughout the state, our top priority is to continue to bring the vaccine to every community here as soon as possible,” he said.

A member of the New York City council has called on authorities to reimburse mask warrants in indoor public spaces.

“We need to change this trend,” said Mark Levine, who chairs the council’s health committee.

He said the use of masks inside was cascading, as in delis, magazines, the metro and cinemas. “It’s time to renew the mandate of the internal mask, even for those who are vaccinated.”

Earlier, Mayor Bill de Blasio said there were no plans to replace mask warrants in New York as the Delta variant spreads across the city.

The strain did more than 40 percent of samples tested last week in New York, up from 26 percent the previous week and 10 percent a month ago.

This week, Los Angeles replaced masking mandates at home – regardless of vaccination status – and San Francisco and Las Vegas issued masquerade recommendations as cases driven by the Delta variant continued to grow.

“New York City needs to act now to slow Delta,” Levine said.

“Because in other places with vaccination rates comparable to ours, hospitalizations have started to grow – especially between [the] without vaccination – a few weeks after the growth of cases, as in San Francisco, ”he added.
