U Seattle Kraken start playing during the 2021-22 season, but the NHL’s 32nd franchise needs a team first.
Seattle will begin adding players during Wednesday’s expansion season, and some of the NHL’s biggest stars are available to pick up. According to Ryan S. Clark of The Athletic, Montreal Canadiens goalkeeper Carey Price, St. Louis Blues winger Vladimir Tarasenko and Colorado Avalanche striker Gabriel Landeskog are among the players who have been left unprotected by the expansion draft.
The availability of the price is amazing. He just led Montreal to the Stanley Cup Final and has been a focal point for the franchise for more than a decade. However, the Habs believe the Kraken will not be willing to take back the rest of their eight-year, $ 84 million contract. The price has a head of $ 10.5 million annually through the 2025-26 season.
Meanwhile, Tarasenko asked for an exchange with the Blues because it would have contrasted with the way St. Louis treated his multiple surgeries. The 29-year-old has two more seasons on his contract at $ 7.5 million a year.
As for Landeskog, he will become a free agent without restrictions. So, even if the Kraken selects him, the 28-year-old could still choose to sign back with Avalanche. However, it’s unclear if Colorado is willing to give them $ 9 to $ 10 million per season looking for their next contract.
Things will no doubt become interesting for the Kraken in the days to come, and only time will tell which stars will choose to be the face of their new franchise.
