Former President Philip Benigno Aquino III died Thursday after a prolonged illness, according to several reports.
Aquino, 61, was the country’s fifteenth president from 2010 to 2016, and was succeeded in office by incumbent Rodrigo Duterte.
According to ABS-CBN News, he was hospitalized last Thursday.
But he had been on dialysis for at least five months and had recently undergone heart surgery.
It was during the Aquino administration that Manila took over China and filed a case before the Hague Arbitration Court for the South China Sea dispute.
Later, the Philippines won that historic case a month after Aquino left his post in 2016.
