The Golden State Warriors are considered a potential destination for Damian Lillard if the Portland Trail Blazers decide to exchange him this summer.
“They’re going to make a call and have already discussed the idea internally, as I’m sure most of the suitors have, considering the smoke growing from Portland,” Athletic Anthony Slater he wrote about the Warriors.
Lillard is set for the 2024-25 season, though he could force an exchange outside of Portland, according to him Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports. The teams “intensely monitored” Lillard’s situation with the Trail Blazers to find an opening to make commercial offers, The Athletic Shams Charania added.
The Philadelphia 76ers and New York Knicks are said to be among the teams interested in the veteran guard.
According to Slater, the Warriors could offer Portland without a doubt the best commercial package for Lillard, including James Wiseman, plus the No. 7 and 14 picks in the 2021 NBA draft. The team could also add Andrew Wiggins and future first rounders to complete a trade.
Lillard’s combination with Stephen Curry will give the Warriors one of the best backcourts in the NBA, especially considering Klay Thompson is expected to return from the torn ACL that kept him away from home all last season.
However, it’s unclear if Lillard would want to be transferred to Golden State as the Warriors have missed the playoffs in back-to-back seasons, and their championship window seems to be closing.
