Boston Bruins Striker David Krejci has been fined $ 5,000 for killing New York Islanders star Mathew Barzal, the NHL Department of Homeland Security announced Sunday.
The incident happened during New York’s Game 4 victory on Saturday. In the second period, Barzal sent several cross-checks to Krejci’s back. The Bruins center finally responded by turning around and hitting Barzal between the legs with his stick.
Krejci was initially given a five-minute image for spearing, but was reduced to a less than two minutes for slashing after a further review.
After the game, Barzal called Krejci’s slash “a little vicious,” adding that he was surprised the referees lowered the penalty.
Krejci scored Boston’s only goal in a 4-1 loss to the Islanders on Saturday night, while Barzal had one goal and one assist.
The Bruins and Islanders will meet Monday night at TD Garden with the series tied at 2-2.
