Meet the new occupant, same as the old occupant.
The Palestinians understand that the exchange of one evangelical extremist as Israeli prime minister for another evangelical extremist will not change for an iota as Israel goes methodically, day after day of crushing, committing apartheid in occupied Palestine.
If there was any doubt about this predictable point, the new bombing of Gaza this past week produced further evidence. The new guy is as quick as the old guy to remind the world that he will use the same lethal apparatus to traumatize, mutilate and kill as many Palestinians as Israel wants, whenever Israel wants, for whatever reason. Israel wants it, as long as Israel wants it and, except for small Ireland, no prime minister or president will do or say much about it.
Yet, Israel is obliged – as an inanimate, pervasive public relations exercise – to trot out one of a familiar litany of “provocations” to justify traumatizing, mutilating and killing as many Palestinians as it wants, whenever it wants, by any means it wants and as much as he wants.
This time, $ 110 million attack jets on Israel wiped out more of Gaza in a matter of days after pieces of dry fields were briefly set on fire by so-called “incendiary” balloons filled with helium and bound by Palestinian “Militants” with strings.
And “provocations” are a tired, sorry pantomime.
Whether it’s balloons, slingshots, burning tires, kites, rocks or glorified, metallic firecrackers, Israel knows it enjoys unrestricted permission outside of The Hague to traumatize, mutilate and kill as many Palestinians as it wants, whenever it wants, for whatever means he wants, for whatever reason he wants, for as long as he wants, and no prime minister or president outside of Ireland will do or say much about it.
So, it doesn’t matter a point what is the name of the last Israeli prime minister, which racist, boorish party he leads, or how he and his conspirators have been able, with supposed Machiavellian abilities, to put together a precarious coalition finally to get rid of the old type. It remains an indelible constant: the apartheid machine continues, day after day of grinding, in occupied Palestine as it has been since the middle of the last century.
Here’s another constant: like the old Israeli prime minister fanatic, the new, fanatical Israeli prime minister also knows that most of the establishment’s TV and newspaper editors pay close attention to what Israel has done. and deals with the Palestinians in occupied Palestine only when Israel decides to bomb the Palestinians in occupied Palestine.
This means that every few years or so, after the outbreak of the “bang-bang” – this is a lingo reporter for when war tools go “boom” – usually invisible Palestinians emerge on Western news networks via cable and on the opinion pages of Western newspapers to talk or write about how Palestinians have and continue to be stripped of their homes and land, imprisoned, tortured, traumatized, mutilated and killed by a long succession of bandits in clothes and uniforms.
This is another, by now, banal pantomime.
Offering Palestinians some time and space to chronicle or condemn Israel’s crimes allows Western Israeli television and newspaper editors to convene a commendation of congratulations for their equanimity and boast: “See, the Palestinians also have their word. “
All this time, these same TV and newspaper editors refuse to acknowledge that Israel has been found guilty by human rights groups of practicing apartheid – as defined by international law and not as a hyperbolic cudgel. – and, by his engineering, he was licensed not only to steal Palestinian homes and lands, but to imprison, torture, traumatize, mutilate and kill Palestinians with impunity.
Whatever the nuisance they may be deprived of by violent, illegal means, Israel employs to systematically steal Palestinian homes and land or how many Palestinians Israelis imprisoned, tortured, traumatized, mutilated and killed, most TV and newspaper editors they have always publicly defended the “right” of Israel. to do all of the above – yesterday, today and tomorrow.
Challenging Israel’s “right” to defend itself against the alleged existential threat of balloons, slingshots, burning tires, kites, rocks or glorified, metallic firecrackers would be a sacrilegious act of geopolitical heresy.
This canonical editorial support for Israel is an almost verbatim reflection of the equally solicitous attitude toward Israel shared by most Western prime ministers and presidents whenever their ally and friend choose to unleash more “bang-bang” on Palestinians imprisoned in occupied Palestine, already seriously wounded. .
That’s why Canadian space foreign minister Marc Garneau has not only refused – like the editors of TV and newspapers who claim to hold him accountable – any discovery, by any quarter, that Israel is a state of apartheid but implying, hysterically, that the “label” is an anti-Semitic trope.
“The position of the liberal government is extremely clear on the question of apartheid etiquette,” Garneau said recently. “We categorically reject it … and we, of course, are completely against any anti-Semitism.”
When he was inevitably replaced as Minister of Foreign Affairs by another pedestrian, card-reading mannequin, Garneau could become an editorial writer in all Canadian newspapers writing his standard apology every time Israel traumatized, mutilated and kill the Palestinians with their unlimited arsenal of “bang-bangs” provided by agreeable arms dealers in Ottawa and beyond.
The corollary of this stubborn phenomenon is, of course, that when the great sustained “bang-bang” demonstration stops, most TV and newspaper editors stop inviting Palestinians to speak or write about it. as Israel continues to rob its homes and land, and imprison, torture, traumatize, mutilate and kill Palestinians with impunity in occupied Palestine.
Invariably, this translates into much less “live success” from TV journalists – largely from Tel Aviv’s security and hospitality community – which describes the decade’s most recent “spasm,” “tit-for-conflict. tat ”which caused death and suffering for“ both sides ”to almost equal extent.
And the lucky “voices” that have garnered a rare fragment of time and space on cable news networks and in newspaper columns to convey the Palestinian “perspective” during the shooting of Israel’s deadly turkey in Gaza are fading. because its symbolic presence is no longer necessary to provide the public with the patina of balance and justice.
In fact, the fact that Israel has resumed bombing Gaza is no longer recorded as “news” for many Western TV and newspaper editors, most of whom – when the “situation” of the Palestinians is concerned – possess the attention of a frightened squirrel.
However, the “war” didn’t break out again – either. When it’s done, they’ll come back to take a momentary look. Until then, he is ready to return to rhetorical affairs as usual: Israel has the “right” to defend itself blah, blah, blah and those “militant” Palestinians continue to demand a bloody nose.
Meanwhile, the Palestinians are left to endure, alone, and above all out of sight, the trauma, indignity and provocations that long ago became a routine aspect of everyday life under the suffocating military occupation of Israel.
This is apartheid from stealth.
Militant Israeli religious fanatics, waving the flag, can fall on the Palestinians in occupied East Jerusalem, shouting “Death to the Arabs” and “let your country burn” and TV and newspaper editors shrug their shoulders.
A brother and a sister who have been taken to social media to reveal the probable expulsion of Palestinians from the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood by an angry force are arrested and TV and newspaper editors shrug their shoulders.
More than 2,000 Palestinians are being cured as cattle and imprisoned shortly after a “ceasefire” was announced to resist the relentless destruction of occupied Palestine and its people, and TV and newspaper editors raised the shoulder.
Heavily armed Israeli militants – euphemistically called “security forces” – stormed the compound of the Al-Aqsa Mosque and fired rubber-coated steel bullets, tear gas and stun grenades, wounding dozens of worshipers, and TV editors. of newspapers are scratched.
An 11-year-old Palestinian boy, Mazen Bessam, is arrested and “detained” by the aforementioned captives – presumably to keep Israel safe – while his younger sister cries and pleads for his release, and TV and TV editors the newspapers shrugged.
As Human Rights Watch and others have documented in precise and persuasive details, the Israeli execution of apartheid never ceases. He is engaged against the Palestinians before, during and after the fickle sounds and “bang-bang” panoramas that temporarily attract the worried eye of TV and newspaper editors who much prefer suspicion, speech and writing. on Donald Trump’s lunatic reflections.
The “bang-bang” is part of the ruthless continuation of Israel’s systemic and sanctioned persecution of Palestinians throughout occupied Palestine.
The voluntary reluctance and failure of Western viewers and newspaper editors to admit this demonstrable fact and fundamentally recalibrate their coverage of what is happening to Palestinians “on the ground” in occupied Palestine makes them complicit in the explicit, inhuman consequences. and disfigurements of the persistent and practical without excuse of apartheid.
The occasional appearance by a Palestinian on TV or in the press every time Israel repeats its explosive “bang-bang” show is almost no remedy for this widespread, shameful blindness.
